Hermiston Police News: HPD to Expand Reserve Officer Program

The Hermiston Police Department is currently recruiting for volunteer reserve police officers. A reserve officer functions in much the same way as a full time police officer except in a volunteer capacity. Reserve officers must be willing to volunteer a minimum of 12 hours per month or 36 hours every three months.

To be a reserve officer, you must meet the minimum qualifications of a police officer set forth in Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and training (DPSST) administrative rule 259-008-0010.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • Must not have any felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions
  • Good moral and ethical character

Final appointment is subject to passing all of the following:

  • Medical and/or psychological examination
  • DPSST approved written test
  • Fingerprint submittal
  • Thorough background investigation

If selected, a Reserve Officer Candidate must be willing to attend a Reserve Officer Academy that will be approximately two evenings per week and all day on several Saturdays for a period of roughly 5 months.
